Two types of gym noise
Impact noise
Dropped dumbbells, dropped bumper plates, jumping, running on treadmills, plyometric drills. Impact noise is what people downstairs hear first and complain about most.
Airborne noise
Music, instructor cues, equipment operation (treadmill motors, fans, free-weight clanks). Airborne noise is what neighbouring tenants in adjacent rooms hear through walls.
Rubber flooring primarily addresses impact noise. Airborne noise control is mostly a wall and ceiling problem.
What rubber flooring does for impact noise
Absorbs impact energy
When a weight drops onto rubber flooring, the rubber compresses, absorbing kinetic energy before it transfers to the slab below. Thicker rubber absorbs more energy. A 12mm floor absorbs noticeably more than a 6mm floor.
Reduces high-frequency clang
The sharp "clang" of metal on concrete becomes a duller, lower-frequency thump on rubber. The total energy is similar; the spectrum is different. Lower frequencies are less perceptually irritating, but they travel through structures further.
Distributes point loads
Rubber spreads the impact across a larger area of the slab below, protecting the concrete and reducing the intensity of the structure-borne vibration.
What rubber flooring cannot do alone
Cannot decouple impact from the structure
Even with thick rubber, dropped weights generate vibration that travels through the slab, into walls, and into the units below. To break that path, you need a decoupling layer (acoustic underlayment) between the gym floor and the structural floor.
Cannot solve airborne noise
Music and shouting move through walls and ceilings. Rubber on the floor does nothing for airborne sound.
Cannot fix a ground-up acoustic problem
If a gym is built on a thin floor assembly above occupied space, no amount of surface treatment fully solves it. The fix is at the structural level (concrete topping, suspended ceiling below, decoupled framing).
Building a quiet gym floor: a layered approach
For ground-floor gyms on slab-on-grade, the rubber floor itself is usually enough. For upper-floor gyms above occupied space, build the floor in layers:
- Structural slab or subfloor (existing).
- Acoustic underlayment (rubber-based acoustic underlayment, 6mm to 12mm). Decouples the gym floor from the structure.
- Gym flooring (8mm to 25mm rubber depending on use). Absorbs impact at the surface.
- Heavy drop zones (additional 25mm to 50mm rubber tiles or lifting platforms over the gym floor).
For the noisiest applications (Olympic lifting, drop platforms), consider also addressing the ceiling below: resilient channels, sound isolation clips, and dense fibrous insulation reduce what transmits into the tenant space.
How much does rubber flooring reduce gym noise?
Specific reduction depends on the full floor assembly and the test conditions. As a directional reference:
- Bare concrete slab with dropped 45 lb bumper: very loud, sharp impact noise that transmits through the structure.
- Concrete slab with 10mm rubber floor: noticeably quieter perceptually; impact energy reduced; some structure-borne transmission remains.
- Concrete slab with acoustic underlayment + 10mm rubber floor: substantially less structure-borne transmission; perceptually much quieter in adjacent spaces.
- Concrete slab with acoustic underlayment + 25mm rubber tiles in a drop zone: optimized for heavy-impact applications.
